Frilling Friday: Sniffles and Chocolate Cake

By

Hello and Happy Friday.

I certainly hope you got more sleep than I did last night, what with being up half the night with a feverish, teething tot (teething? oak pollen? a spring cold? all of the above?). Last night it stormed and turned cold, so we’re having one last winter’s hurrah today here in Texas….

… snuggling up and consoling ourselves with warm soup and our favorite toys (Stripes the bunny and Rocky Raccoon, in her case; my knitting, online bill pay (ok not a favorite),  and The Paris Wife in mine).

Today I’m also planning to make a Aunt Betty’s Chocolate Pound Cake for a gathering of friends this evening.  This is not low-cal, folks.  Make it at your own risk.  I’ll try to post a photo once I get it made.

Aunt Betty’s Chocolate Pound Cake

The Stuff:
2 sticks butter
1/2 c shortening (I use non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening)
3 c sugar
5 large eggs
3 c flour, sifted
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
5 tbsp cocoa powder
1 c milk

The Do:
Mix butter and shortening.  Add sugar and salt. Then add all 5 eggs at once.  Now mix in the remaining ingredients.  Bake at 300 for 2 hours.

Pretty straightforward, right?  Aunt Betty is a pretty straightforward gal.

Frilling Friday: 2012′s Frilling Spring Trends

By

Happy Friday!  Today I’m thinking about all the Frilling trends that are happening (or still happening) for spring.  I was reading about some of them in Harper’s Bazaar.  Go there for more images from Fashion Week.

Florals are here to stay (Peter Som):

Tribal prints are still rolling strong (Zero Maria Cornejo):

Strong nods to the 1920’s (Marc Jacobs):

Another 20’s nod from Rachel Zoe:

Sporty-Glam (3.1 Philip Lim):

Sorbet Colors:

Geometrics (Ohne Titel):

Will you be translating some of these trends into your everyday?

Oh, and P.S. Shana has a FRILLING list of 7 Style Resolutions for 2012.  Check it out, particularly if you’re confused about how to wear cropped pants :)

Frilling Friday: News, Links

By

Hello and Happy Friday!
Aurelia and I are so excited about this new year on You Frill Me!  We have lots of ideas and fun things planned, as well as a FRILLING blog remodel currently in the works.  A couple of FRILLING things of note:

We’re on Facebook!  Please, give us some love and like our page.

We’re on Pinterest!  You can follow our boards here.

This Mama is FRILLED to announce that Baby B has her first pair of skinny jeans!

Everybody’s talking about the color of the year, Tangerine Tango.  Aurelia is already wearing it on her lips!

Suzy found a bunch of home accessories in this year’s color on Etsy.

My gal Lane has an awesome idea for keeping track of your exercise.

Mia-Louise’s home is gorgeous.  I’m kindof obsessed with it.  Her best style advice: “Save your money and wait to buy the things you really love and want.”  That’s advice I can get behind.

Oh, I am just not so sure about this.  Reserving judgement, though… (Aurelia will probably come out wearing it fabulously and then I’ll eat my words)

Finally!  Someone is wearing an awesome poncho!

Did you find anything FRILLING this week?  Share in the comments!

Frilling Friday: busy, crazy…

By

All our stuff is on a moving truck en route to Texas!  Where I get to live by Aurelia!  Watch out: Frills are sure to happen when the two of us are together.

A special babe turns one a couple weeks ago, and I hope to post pics of her party soon. As I mentioned, we have been in the midst of our move to Texas. Soon things will settle down and I will have more time for FRILLING things.

(The birthday banner I got from House8810)

Meanwhile, here are a few things tickling my fancy this first day of December, amidst my running craziness:

Hello Anthropologie blouse.

My friend Jen is contemplating the purchase of a Little Black Dress.

An interesting discussion on beauty over at Design Mom.

Christmas makes me a little anxious.  All the Stuff involved gets overwhelming. I’m especially anxious now that I have a child to whom people want to give (lots and lots of) Stuff.  How do we keep it manageable? Got any advice?

I’m always searching for the perfect purse/diaper bag for like a year and a half now.  Is this it?

Green tights aren’t just for Santa’s elves.

anything Frilling you this weekend?

Frilling Friday: Recycled Leather

By

Happy Friday!

Recently I discovered (via LovingEco) recycled leather goods, and I’m loving the look of some of the recycled leather handbags I’ve found. These artists use castoff leather jackets, pants, and upholstery to create one-of-a-kind, earth-friendly accessories.

The Safari bag:

Navajo Shoulder bag:

Teal Ruffled Clutch:

The Tote, by Erin Templeton:

Are you picky about handbags and purses?  I am just about the pickiest person alive, and I’m especially picky about handbags.  I think the older I get, the more discerning I get about what I buy; I have bought too many items over the years that I didn’t really like after all, didn’t last, or were too trendy to last through years. These days, I want a smaller, more functional, better-quality wardrobe and accessory collection.  I don’t want clutter. I want to buy less, and be choosy so that when I do purchase an item, I know it’s one I’ll use and love for a long time.  And I’m willing to hunt a long time for the “right” item for me.

What kind of shopper are you?  Are you like me, unwilling to settle for “ok”?  Are you an impulse buyer? Would you rather have a lot of variety or the one perfect piece?

Frilling Friday: Autumn Almond-Pear Cake

By

Happy Friday!

I am FRILLED to report that this week I made my first-ever grain-free cake (besides cheesecake and vegan “cheese”cake).  I used Coco’s recipe for Almond Cherry Upside Down Cake, but I used pears instead of cherries because pears are in season.  And I can’t stop raving about how delicious this cake is.  I LOVE almond, and it’s made from almond flour only; no wheat flour or any other grain, no gluten, and because I used coconut oil in place of ghee -  no dairy ingredients.  Can you believe how gorgeous?

High-protein, low-sugar, and full of healthy fats….healthy and delicious! And perfect with a cup of warm chai with coconut milk…

Frilling Friday

Happy Friday!
Here are a few things that interested me this week…

Oh Joy blogged these patterned pieces from Wren, and think they are lovely.  Not that I would spend that kind of dough on day-to-day wear.  This abstract animal print especially FRILLs me:

Take probiotics for healthy response to stress (vegeater).

The ANMJ gals have some great advice for the bustier, broad-shouldered babes on how to wear stripes.

Karen is making homemade butter and ricotta.  I’m always jealous of anything she’s doing.

On my agenda for today is to bake some gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free mini muffins a la Roost

oh my, beer and pretzels? yum…    (via)

This weekend we’re having friends for brunch, and going on a date without baby (yep, first date in 6 months.  Gonna get some (reputedly) awesome eats at Gracias Madre in the Mission.)  Are you doing anything fun?
