Fuzzy Baby Rooster

By

This little guy was the first toy I made.  I have been meaning to show him to you.  He’s crocheted of 100% wool yarn and stuffing, with the exception of his eyes and nose, which are acrylic embroidery floss.  You can find the pattern here. I just improvised his comb with a series of double and triple crochet stitches.

I think he reminds me of baby, I say, baby Foghorn Leghorn. Maybe we’ll name him Foggy, as a tribute.

Frilling Inspiration: Knitted Toys

By

We try to keep toys to a quality, happy minimum at our house, and we try to opt for well-made, long-lasting, imagination-inspiring toys; as opposed to cheap, plastic toys that are more for entertainment than for actual play. (I could go on and on about my toy philosophy, but suffice it to say:) Huzz and I agree that, for the most part, we want B to have toys that are beautiful to see and touch. Plus we’d both go nuts if our home were overrun with garish plastic.

I love that Baby B has (a few, so far) toys that are lovingly hand-made of natural materials. Which is part of the reason why I’m currently hooked on toy-making, ever since my first little crochet birdie (which I keep forgetting to post a photo of). Now, I’m inspired to try my hand at knitting a toy or two, so I picked up this book, Knitted Toys: 25 fresh and fabulous designs_, by Zoe Mellor, at my local yarn shop:

Her designs are adorable, and I can’t wait to knit up a few of them.

Huzz really wants me to make the robot next…

But for now I’m busy working on…

Little Crochet Birdies

By

I have recently begun a new crafting addiction: crochet!  So far, I know how to crochet granny squares, potholders, dishrags, scarves, and this cute little birdie, of which I have made one, whose wings are slightly crooked, but is nevertheless lovable:

But, I think I’m going to have to get a little more ambitious, now that I have seen these:

Ok, I know that birds are getting a little overdone in the design world, but I am envisioning an adorable mobile for Baby’s room…or a Christmas tree decorated with crochet birds, or crochet bird bunting, or using them as fan pulls… oh my goodness I’m getting carried away…

I wonder how long they take to make… longer than naptime?
